A headache is a symptom of a number of different conditions of the head, neck and body. It can therefore be confusing for people to understand where the real problem is stemming from. In Australia 87% of people experience headaches every year, with the most common way of treating them being painkillers.
Headaches are a common complaint we hear from Pilates clients and for many people they can be a daily occurrence, and one that has lasted for a number of years.
One of the most common causes of headaches that we see here is the prolonged poor posture associated with sitting at a computer or desk that leads to stiffness in the joints and muscles around the neck. Because the headache is more apparent than the stiff neck clients can become confused about the actual cause of the headache. Pilates offers a great way to alleviate these symptoms, through both educating clients and also strengthening the correct muscles to improve seated posture.
Pilates also addresses stiff joints and tightness in the neck and body through mobility of joints and stretching, both dynamically and statically.
As well as muscle tightness around the head, neck and shoulder area, neural tightness is another common cause of headaches. A method we practice in our Pilates studio known as neural gliding can be very effective in releasing tight nerves not just around the head and neck but around the entire body.
Pilates can also help to improve headaches through encouraging correct breathing, relaxation, precision and control of movement of the body. All of these skills encourage efficient posture and movement in our everyday lives.
